Totara Flats Hut Overnight 12-13 September 2009 We were scheduled to tramp into Mitre Flats hut for an overnight, but had to change plans and went into Totara Flats hut instead. Five of us set off from Holdsworth car park around 10.45am on an overcast and warm day - Rob M, Martin W, Stephen D, Jeannine and me. Found it humid on the climb up the Gentle Annie track to the Totara Flats turnoff, but easy tramping on the upgraded track. They certainly haven't upgraded the track on the drop down the other side to the Waiohine River! Attractive scenery but you did have to watch your footing with the steep grade and numerous trees roots, mud puddles etc. It had started to rain on the way down and that did make a difference to our tramping rate. Took us around 5 hours in all to get to the hut - a welcome sight. Met up with a group from the Tararua Tramping Club - very pleasant evening in the hut chatting away, drinking away and playing a few party games. Heartened to see the sun the next morning and after getting over the swing bridge (my goodness it is very bouncy still - had heard stories of what it was like before the supporting wires were tensioned up!!) enjoyed the tramp out with the dappled sunlight and gurgling stream surroundings. Have you seen the new platform they've built on Rocky Lookout? Had superb views all around while eating our lunch - could pick out both Powell and Jumbo on the skyline. A great weekend - we're working on our fitness and having seen the huts in the distance, hoping to complete the Powell/Jumbo circuit in the next little while. Pamela
